A Little About Monroe, WA

Monroe is well-known for its annual Evergreen State Fair, a 12-day county fair held at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in late August and early September. Approximately 350,000 people attend this annual fair every year, the largest in the state of Washington.

Originally called Park Place, the city was renamed Monroe in 1890 in honor of former U.S. President James Monroe. The town was formed in 1902 and selected as the location for a condensed milk plant and a state correctional facility. Monroe Correctional Complex, the state’s second largest prison, remains in the city.

Imagine Monroe is a vision statement released by the city in 2021 that aims to strengthen connections and create safe spaces for the entire community. The city takes great pride in its close-knit, anti-racist, and family-friendly community, among other values.

The city combines rural living with urban conveniences, so you can still enjoy recreational activities such as hiking, climbing, skiing, cycling, and mountain biking in the vicinity. Additionally, the Pacific Mountain Sports in downtown Monroe can help you with bike equipment, services, and rental needs.
