A famous tourist spot for white-water rafting on the Skykomish River, Gold Bar was named by a miner who found traces of gold on a gravel bar. In 1869, it was a camp for prospectors. Later, it became a camp for building, and in 1910, Gold Bar became an official town.
In a city built around play, white-water rafting and fishing in the Skykomish River are not the only leisure activities you can enjoy. There’s horseback riding, hiking at the famous Wallace Falls State Park, visiting the Wallace River Salmon Hatchery, and off-roading at the Reiter Pit.
The Gold Dust Days Heritage Festival is an annual event in the city on the 4th weekend of July. It draws thousands of people who come to the festival to pan for gold, buy handmade goods, listen to live music, and feast on delicious food. The Saturday of the weekend also features the customary car show.
An interesting fact is that the 2016 film Captain Fantastic was shot in and around the city and nearby Sultan and Index towns.
